From its inception, the lighthouse was a sign of welcome, a sign that someone cared. The original lighthouse is believed to have been a fire lit on a hillside to guide some late-arriving fisherman back to his home port. The first recorded lighthouse was built in Egypt in 300 B.C. The Pharos of Alexandria, as the tower was called, is estimated to have been about 450 feet tall. Bearing an open flame at the top, it was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Closer to home, the first lighthouse on the Great Lakes was built in 1819 at Presque Isle, the old French fortress at the city known as Erie, Pa. Rebuilt in 1867, it stands today as the Erie Pierhead light. For centuries, lighthouses worldwide have been fueled by wood, candles and coal; later by gas; and most recently by electricity. Today fully-automated lighthouse are replacing many of their ancestors. To survive the gales and waves of the rocky shores on which it usually stands, a lighthouse must be strong and solid, built on a firm foundation.
